The cliche is that 90% of directing is casting. with Dreamgirls, 90% of casting is casting Effie. You know, this really is the part that Dreamgirls is famous for. And anyone who plays this part has enormous shoes to fill: those of Jennifer Holliday The search for Effie was a search. And by that, I mean there were open calls held in Atlanta, St, Louis, Detroit, Chicago, New York. It was really the biggest challenge of all, largely because when Jennifer Holliday played the part, she really put an imprint on those songs. The only way to approach that is to pretend the problem doesn't exist. You know, because the last thing anybody could do is imitate her. We had to find someone who was a certain age, had that voice like nobody else, could act. You know, it was a really, really tall order. Someone counted them up one day. I think it's over 700 Effies that were seen across the country. And what I'm always struk by, when i've cast anything, is that, "God," you think, "It's gonna be so hard to pick. "There've got to be 50 of them out there, or 20." But there aren't. When you really look at what a part demands, it just does come down to a handful of people. The casting process was a roller coaster. They call me out of the blue, while I was in the washroom in my house, probably doing my makeup. And it was like, "We want you to come down to New York and audition for Dreamgirls." So, I did my first audition, and then they called and it was like, "Okay, now we got to do an open-call audition." And I was just like... I had to let it go because I wanted it so bad. I'm like, "If I just constantly dwell on it, I will go crazy." You know, we kept a little pin, as we say, in Jennifer, and we kept looking. And it came down to a handful of very talented people. And then it became very clear that Jennifer had all of the qualities. So then they called back in September. It was like, "We want you to come in and do a second audition." Four days later they call back. I was in the studio, and they was like, "We want to see you out here LA. We want you to do a full screen test." We called her back. She came out for, you know, a final screen test with Bill. Hair, makeup, practically the orchestra, and she just nailed it. And they called the next day, and it was Bill. And he was like, "Congratulations, Jennifer Hudson, you are Effie White." And I'm like, "I did it!" I was outside on my knees, just shouting and crying, and just crazy. I really put Jennifer through it. And I think she understood that. You know, this is a big part to get. And you really have to prove that you can do it. And the one thing I wasn't sure I was seeing was the rock-solid confidence that, of course, once I got to know Jennifer, completely emerged. But you realize that this is somebody who, at a very young age, had gone on American Idol, lost in a very public way, in a controversial way. Simon Cowell told her, "Plan on doing something else with your life, '"cause you will never get another shot." I think her confidence had been battered by this experience. But there's no doubt that she has it. When I was eliminated from Idol, I stood on the stage, and people wanted a speech and they was like, "Why is she not crying?" And I'm like, "Because I'm gonna be okay. "There's something coming. I know it." You know, I didn't know what it was, I didn't know when, I didn't know how. But I knew it was gonna come. I've enjoyed this journey and I'm more than grateful, and I thank God for this opportunity. And I know there is something in store for me. But God bless you all. 12'53"
