4'06" Most great musicals are backstage musicals. Most great musicals are about the process of performing, you know. People sing and dance and it's a little less comfortable when you have people in ordinary professions doing that. I think it takes a bit more of a leap of the imagination, That's always the challenge with movies, letting, drawing people into the idea that people are gonna sing and dance and it just gets infinitely easier if those people are already performers. And Dreamgirls really has a classic backstage story, but with a twist. They solved, in the original production of Dreamgirls, a problem that's built into almost all backstage musicals. And that is they have thinking first acts, because there's always somebody who wants to break in and wants to succeed. And the first act charts rise of that person. And the second act is the dreary part, which is the price you pay for success. All those things, you know, often they become cautionary tales. But it becomes more about the trajectory down, and then finding some nice spot to land at the end. In Dreamgirls, they split the protagonists, so that you had Curtis, who had these dreams of breaking through to, kind of, mainstream American culture. And he pursues that dream relentlessly and successfully all through the first act. Effie, who wants to have a chance just to express herself and to sing, she actually starts at place like this and goes down, down, down, because her dreams are being destroyed. But then, in the second act, Curtis follows that that traditional, kind of, downward path, but Effie gets to rise, so you get the thrill of a kind of a second first act in this structure. I think it was very, very clever.
